Myth Salon: Psyche and the Sacred with Dr. Lionel Corbett

On Thursday January 9, the Myth Salon will be visited by Dr. Lionel Corbett, a renowned international scholar and Jungian analyst, whose book The Religious Function of the Psyche and whose Psyche and the Sacred workshops are centerpieces of depth psychological scholarship. Dr. Corbett will discuss the value of his work through Psyche and the Sacred: A Contemplative Community (PSCC), a non-profit community he co-founded in 2016 that gathers in search of a personal sense of the sacred through lectures and dreamwork. PSCC’s work is not dependent upon traditional religious dogma, instead recognizing the potential of religious and spiritual value in numinous and anomalous experiences. Together the PSCC community engages in depth psychological approaches to spirit and soul through focusing on new forms of revelation by means of dreams, visionary experiences, the body, synchronistic events, nature and the earth, and attention to our complexes. His work is based on the idea of interconnectivity, that by working in groups on individual material, we bring transformative consciousness to the greater whole.

Lionel Corbett, MD, is a Jungian Psychoanalyst, trained in medicine and psychiatry in England, who took his Jungian training at the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Dr. Corbett is core-faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute where he teaches depth psychology in the Depth, Archetypal and Jungian Studies, and Integrative Therapies and Healing Practices doctoral programs. A renowned international scholar, he has written and presented professional papers at APA and Jungian conferences in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. He has authored five books: Psyche and The Sacred, The Religious Function of the Psyche, The Sacred Cauldron: Psychotherapy as a Spiritual Practice, The Soul in Anguish: Psychotherapeutic approaches to Suffering, and Understanding Evil: A Psychotherapist’s Guide. Dr. Corbett is also co-editor of Jung and Aging, Depth Psychology: Meditations in the Field, Psychology at the Threshold, and Psyche’s Stories: Jungian Interpretations of Fairy Tales.
