15. Plow

Notice that what these instruments all have in common is that they cut through the boundary of above and below. The Adze is one of the earliest tools used to cut into the earth to plant seeds. This was later replaced by the plow, which was pulled by the red live stock. All of the above were associated with the God Set, who you see cutting the way into the underworld, through the snake. The snake is Apep, or Apophis, whose body demarcates the boundary between above and below. This is a common motif. For example, in Mayan, Norse and Greek myth, a serpent separates the surface world (at its edges) from the world below. The scepter Set holds when he cuts the way through sunset is called the Was-Sceptre. It is associated with the adze. So as the adze cuts into the earth, the Was cuts through the horizon. As the adze cuts in for the seed, the Was cuts in for the sun. The Was is to the Adze what the Sun is to the Seed (as Seth is to the livestock with its driver). But what of that leg up there? Where did the leg come from? What we know is that for centuries, the big dipper was known as the Leg of Seth, but then, in a later egyptian era, it was recognized as an Adze, which we associate with the Was -- again, all are associated with Seth. Seth is the personification of the penetrator. He is also associated with invading armies and invading storms. So what of the leg? Well, when we dig into the myth of Seth, we find that in some of its oldest forms, it involves him in a battle with Horus. In this battle, Horus and Seth are both Boars. Seth cuts the eye from Horus face, and Horus gores off Set's testicle. As they fight, their feet rip up the battle field, and as they bleed, they renew the earth with life. The blood of the boars mimes the flooding of the red Nile in the Egyptian plains--in Egyptian fields. Where does grass grow naturally? What naturally cuts into the earth where the grass naturally grows? The answer is the answer to why the Leg of Seth was later seen as the Adze of Seth. Before humans cut into the earth to plant seeds with an adze, the feet of animals cut into the earth--stamping in the seed. Continuing down this line of thinking will will eventually lead to the association of warrior-blood with the renewal of crops with the resurrection of warriors with the renewal of crops.

15. Osiris + Grain

Here we see grain growing from the coffin of Osiris, which was practiced as a ritual. This visual demonstrates the association of Osiris with the grain. His death is associated with the harvest, his resurrection with the new crop. Keep going... and you see the first sprout of the seed (known as a radical), deep in the soil, as the first spark of Osiris' new life... as the conception of his son within Isis. We will continue to circle the myth of Osiris and his beloved wife. Its mysteries are invaluable to us.
