Published on July 1, 2020, Myth, Poetics & Culture: Creative Encounters with Dr. Dennis Patrick Slattery is a five-class series that explores mytho-poetics — the way each of us shapes and is shaped by a particular mythos, a way of seeing, a corridor of awakening.
The red thread running through all five sessions is an investigation of how personal and cultural narratives intertwine, bridging mythology and art through reflective practice and dialogue.
The Master Classes series invites participants into a deep engagement with mytho-poetics, that fertile ground where personal story meets the larger patterns of cultural mythology. Each session is designed as a creative encounter, not a passive lecture, encouraging attendees to explore how mythic imagination shapes perception and meaning. Through guided inquiry and discussion, the classes illuminate the ways we are both shaped by and shapers of the stories we inherit. This approach honors the ancient tradition of learning through mythic narrative while remaining grounded in contemporary psychological and literary insights, offering a space where wisdom emerges through shared creative exploration.
Central to the Master Classes is the recognition that myth is not merely a relic of the past but a living force that animates our daily lives. The curriculum traces the red thread of mythos through poetry, film, literature, and the visual arts, revealing how archetypal patterns continue to inform human experience. Participants are invited to examine their own mythic landscape, identifying the guiding stories that shape their sense of purpose and belonging. This work draws on depth psychology, comparative mythology, and the arts to foster a richer understanding of how symbolic language speaks to the soul and opens corridors of awakening.
These educational offerings are co-hosted by scholars who bring diverse expertise to the exploration of myth and culture. The collaborative format mirrors the roundtable spirit of the Mythosophia community, where dialogue and shared inquiry are valued over solitary expertise. Each Master Class session builds a container for transformative learning, blending intellectual rigor with imaginative openness. Participants emerge with not only new knowledge but also a refreshed sense of how their personal mythos connects to the broader human story, making the ancient wisdom of myth accessible and relevant for contemporary life.
The opening session of the series, establishing the framework for exploring mytho-poetics as both a personal and cultural practice. Dr. Slattery guides participants through the foundational ideas that animate the full five-class journey.
A focused session on the intersection of mythic narrative and artistic expression. Participants explored how the act of "riting" — writing as ritual — can open pathways between inherited stories and creative practice.
Sessions in the Creative Encounters series have featured a range of distinguished voices from the fields of mythology, psychology, and narrative studies.
